A Wild Thyme in the Adirondacks
On our July vacation we started our drive into the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, I couldn’t help notice the beautiful waves of pink covering the clifts on the sides of the road. When I pulled the car over so I could get a better look, I realized that it was a wild thyme (Thymes pulegioides). This thyme grows in the worst conditions. The ground was gritty with rocks and stones, and very little topsoil. It seem to be growing everywhere, even in the mowed lawns of the area residents. Another thyme that has the same habit and does very well in these conditions is Thymus serphyllum. Both are easy to grow from seed, and you can get the seed from Richters Herbs or Johnny’s Seeds
